What is Residential OCD Treatment?
At The Trails, our specialized team of mental health experts work with clients to untangle the factors contributing to their OCD symptoms in a residential inpatient environment. OCD can be rooted in anxiety, brain chemistry, trauma, and even ADHD. It’s not uncommon for individuals with OCD to have a co-ocurring mental health condition. This makes OCD more complex than it may seem on the surface, which is why some individuals respond best to comprehensive residential treatment.
When some people think of inpatient treatment, the first thing that comes to mind is a hospital. The Trails is different. Our 20 acre campus in Newark, Ohio is more like a mental health retreat – but with licensed therapists, psychiatrists, nurses, case managers, and other mental health professionals.
Previously a private estate, The Trails was retrofitted to support many of the same medical services available in a psychiatric hospital, except in a home-like environment without the locked doors or bright hospital lighting. Our clients enjoy amenities, excursions, holistic activities, and more during their stay – with the ultimate goal of treating and recovering from once unmanageable OCD symptoms.
Being a residential treatment center, clients reside at our facility for an extended period while they receive treatment – usually 30 days or longer. Aside from our clinical teams, our facility is also staffed 24/7 with both nursing and behavioral health technicians.
OCD Treatment Center Cost in Ohio
There are very limited options for residential OCD treatment in Ohio, so The Trails is proud to be one of the few providers offering evidence-based long-term care. Fortunately, residential mental health treatment is often covered by health insurance. The Trails accepts most commercial insurance plans in Ohio – such as the benefits you receive through an employer or family member. Costs vary depending on your policy, do we encourage you to call us at 866-959-9910 to verify your coverage for inpatient OCD treatment.
OCD Treatment Plans & Services at The Trails
Clients at our program receive fully custom and individualized treatment plans. No individual has the same needs. However, there are a range of services most clients receive or have access to while participating in our mental health program.
OCD Medicines & Psychiatry
Not all individuals living with OCD require medication, but many do find medication extremely effective when working in conjunction with psychotherapy. Our team helps clients explore all options for OCD treatment, the pros and cons of each, and if medication is indicated, conduct trials in a safe and monitored environment.
Mental health medications are unique in the sense that many conditions can have a range of possibly effective medications. One medication that works for one person may be ineffective for another, even with the same mental health diagnosis. It can also take days, weeks, or even months to fully determine whether a medication is effective. This is one of the major benefits of testing medications in residential program like The Trails.
Psychotherapy For OCD
Our clients are all assigned a primary therapist who works with them one-on-one to develop a clinical treatment plan for their obsessive compulsive disorder. Therapies include a variety of evidence-based modalities for the treatment of OCD and usually include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and exposure and response prevention (ERP). This usually includes:
- Talk therapy to uncover and process problems into distinct parts, such as your thoughts, feelings, and actions. This has been shown to help individuals identify unhealthy thought patterns that often lead to obsessive compulsions.
- Once identified, encouragement to practice facing anxiety without neutralising obsessive thoughts with compulsions, starting with the least anxiety-inducing activities. With compassionate assistance and encouragement from professionals, clients can learn to overcome fears without allowing detrimental compulsions take over.
Holistic Therapies
Holistic therapies have been repeatedly proven to be effective when combined with other mental health treatments. Holistic options at The Trails mental health retreat include:
- Adventure therapy
- Art therapy
- Meditation
- Yoga
- Hiking and nature-informed therapy
Excursions & Experiences
Aside from treatment curriculums, we just like to have fun too! At The Trails, our clients gain an unforgettable experience that includes activities, games, leisure, off-residence excursions, and more.
What Does OCD Look Like?
OCD can look different for everyone, depending on the severity. Generally, it is characterized by intrusive thoughts, anxiety, and obsessions – as well as compulsions, which are excessive repeated behaviors that are often a response to obsessions.
Common obsessions include:
- Germs or illness
- Fear of losing things
- Fear of losing control
- Intrusive thoughts about sex
- Intrusive thoughts about religion
- Intrusive thoughts about harm to yourself or others
- Excessive concerns with orderliness, cleanliness, or symmetry
Common compulsions include excessive:
- Cleaning
- Counting
- Checking things
- Repeating thoughts or words in your head
- Asking for reassurance
- Handwashing
- Arranging items
- Specific rituals
When severe, symptoms can become so intrusive that individuals aren’t able to keep up with daily chores, work, or even leave their home. This can lead to poor health, strained relationships, or inability to maintain employment.
With proper treatment, many individuals can apply health coping mechanisms and thought patterns to break the cycle of these detrimental OCD symptoms.
