Ohio Schizophrenia Treatment: Premier Residential Treatment Near Columbus, Ohio
Schizophrenia is a chronic mental health condition affecting more than 20 million people worldwide and thousands of Ohioans. It can seriously impact one’s quality of life. Without proper stabilization or when left untreated, schizophrenia can worsen and often results in hospitalization, incarceration, or risky behavior.
At The Trails, we offer a unique missing treatment option in Ohio for those suffering from schizophrenia. Most psychiatric hospitals in Ohio offer emergency stabilization for those in crisis, which is often just a 72-hour inpatient program. Though these programs play an important role, they fall short of much-needed long-term treatment and stabilization.
The Trails is a long-term residential facility that offers extended stabilization, transitional living, medication management, counseling, case management, and more. Our program was designed to offer a comprehensive treatment option that goes beyond crisis intervention alone.

Benefits of Long-Term Treatment For Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is often characterized by delusions, hallucinations, and/or debilitating paranoia. People who suffer from schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder also can have difficulty managing their thoughts, perceiving their surroundings, communicating, and maintaining healthy behaviors.
If you or a loved one is suffering with schizophrenia, we understand how stressful it can be. You may be worried about what the future holds for your loved one. Many individuals may struggle to find a medication that works, or perhaps you or a loved one has been hospitalized at a crisis unit and still find it difficult to cope with symptoms. Long-term treatment can be the missing link that enables a more sustainable lifestyle. Primary benefits of long-term schizophrenia treatment include:
Stabilization: Many individuals living with schizophrenia can find themselves in a cycle of crisis, intervention, and stabilization. This is why 72-hour hospitalization may not be sufficient – and why long-term treatment has improved outcomes. In our long-term mental health program, clients have at least 30 days to continue treatment, ensure proper stabilization, and gain access to additional resources. This approach reduces crisis recurrence and improves the quality of life for both our clients and their families.
Medication Testing: Another common difficulty with schizophrenia is medication management and compliance, which is the most important factor to prevent symptom progression. Medication compliance can result from unwanted side effects, or even be a direct result of symptoms of their condition, such as paranoia. At The Trails, we help our clients manage and stabilize their medications in a supervised setting before they transition out of our care, which is difficult to achieve in a 72-hour crisis program alone.
More Resources: At The Trails, we know there is hope. Schizophrenia cannot be cured, but many individuals can learn to better manage symptoms and avoid crises when they have access to the right resources. Our case managers help you or loved one learn about and gain access to additional resources outside of our care. This may be related to housing, appointments, employment, life skills, grocery shopping, and more.
Insurance Covered: Many aren’t aware that long-term residential mental health treatment up to 90 days, or even more, may be covered by your insurance plan. We’re proud to be in-network with most major insurance plans, which enables us to provide comprehensive treatment to more Ohioans. Want to verify your coverage? Call us today at 866-959-9910.
Is The Trails Right For Me?
At The Ohio Mental Health Center at The Trails, we offer extended residential aftercare for individuals who need a little extra help managing schizophrenia medications, developing life skills, and learning new coping strategies in order to build an independent lifestyle. We are not a crisis hospital, so we aren’t equipped to stabilize individuals in a psychiatric emergency. If you or a loved one are an immediate danger to themselves or others, we would refer out to a psychiatric crisis center or advise you to call 911.
For those who have been stabilized, treatment doesn’t end there. At The Trails, we help our clients grow beyond stabilization to build a strong foundation for lasting schizophrenia recovery. To understand if The Trails is right for you or a loved, you can consider the following question:
- Do you need help managing medications?
- Do you struggle with long-term treatment compliance?
- Do you or a loved one struggle to live independently?
- Do you have additional mental health concerns?
- Do you need help coping with your diagnosis?
- Do you have medication side effects, but are nervous to test other options?
This is not an exhaustive list, but if you answered yes to any of these questions, The Trails may be a good fit for you or a loved one. To discuss your situation more in-depth, we encourage you to reach out to our specialists at 866-959-9910.
Your Schizophrenia Treatment Plan
Schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder are complex conditions. Unfortunately, many people find themselves hospitalized for a crisis, only to have a recurrence of symptoms or uncomfortable side effects. Crisis units often do not offer the level of intimate care nor long enough care to truly get a grasp on treatments that work – and continue to work. They may help immensely during an emergency, but sometimes fall short of future crisis prevention, medication trials, and true healing.
At The Trails, we offer a longer-term program in a comfortable homelike setting. Most clients stay in treatment with us for at least 30 days. This gives your psychiatrist and clinicians adequate time to find treatment methods that work for you.
Each person is unique, so we believe successful mental health treatment should have a highly individualized approach. Working with your team of providers, you will develop new coping skills, life skills, receive evidence-based therapies, and may test different medications to find one that works with minimal side effects – all while in a safe and comfortable environment.
To begin your personalized schizophrenia treatment plan, we recommend calling us at 866-959-9910. Generally, schizophrenia treatment plans at The Trails include:
1. Medications
Medications are very common for the treatment of schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. Typically, antipsychotics are used, but other medications, such as antidepressants or anxiety medication may be used in conjunction.
Some antipsychotic medications can bring significant side effects. This is why some individuals with schizophrenia stop taking medication, even if the medication appears to work. Luckily, there are many medication options. If you’ve had side effects from one medication, it does not mean all antipsychotic medications will cause the same side effect.
Each person will have different side effects to different medications, so this is why residential care can be so beneficial. While in a safe environment, you can find a medication that both treats your mental symptoms and limits unwanted side effects.
Some examples of schizophrenia medication include:
- Aripiprazole (Abilify)
- Asenapine (Saphris)
- Brexpiprazole (Rexulti)
- Cariprazine (Vraylar)
- Clozapine (Clozaril, Versacloz)
- Iloperidone (Fanapt)
- Lurasidone (Latuda)
- Olanzapine (Zyprexa)
- Paliperidone (Invega)
- Quetiapine (Seroquel)
- Risperidone (Risperdal)
- Ziprasidone (Geodon)
This is not an exhaustive list, but simply is shown as an example of the number of medication options available.
We also offer long-term injectable options. Injectable medication has been shown to increase schizophrenia treatment retention. Because paranoia is a symptom of schizophrenia, some individuals even experience paranoia surrounding their treatment program, which may cause them to stop taking medication.
Examples of injectable medications include:
- Aripiprazole (Abilify Maintena, Aristada)
- Fluphenazine decanoate
- Haloperidol decanoate
- Paliperidone (Invega Sustenna, Invega Trinza)
- Risperidone (Risperdal Consta, Perseris)
2. Psychosocial Treatment
There other component of your schizophrenia treatment plan at The Trails will be psychosocial treatment methods. This helps treat both the psychological and behavioral components of mental illness. Treatments may include:
- Individual therapy
- Group therapy
- Family therapy
- Social skills training
- Life skills
- Coping skills
- Holistic therapy, such as meditation, art therapy, and adventure therapy
- Vocational support and case management
Individuals who receive a variety of psychosocial interventions in conjunction with medication have the highest probability of achieving symptom remission or significant symptom reduction. This enables our clients to start focusing more time on relationships, their career, hobbies, and personal growth.
Our Ohio Schizophrenia Treatment Center Improves Quality of Life
At The Trails, we empower our clients to reach their full potential while living with schizophrenia. A good way to describe our program philosophy is by using Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Maslow’s Hierarchy includes:
- Physiological Needs
- Safety Needs
- Love and Belonging Needs
- Esteem Needs
- Self-Actualization
With Maslow’s theory, individuals must first have their psychological needs met before their safety needs can be met, and safety needs met before love and belonging needs are met – and so on. All of their needs must be met in order to achieve self-actualization (a way to describe reaching one’s full potential and exploring creative activities).
Individuals suffering with chronic schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder often struggle to meet their basic needs. When basic needs are not met, people experience a much lower quality of life. They may find themselves in crisis, desperation, or poor health.
Because a feature of schizophrenia is difficulty communicating and managing thoughts, you or a loved one may struggle to hold a job, maintain relationships, make doctor’s appointments, or manage finances.
At the Ohio schizophrenia treatment center at The Trails, we meet you where you are at. Your dedicated team develops a treatment plan to ensure all of your needs are met. Through the help of medications, therapies, and vocational support, we enable our clients to begin focusing on all of their needs to go beyond crisis intervention, such as love and belonging, self-esteem, and more.
